Privacy Policy

Account information. When you create an account, we store your email address and a securely hashed version of your password — we never store your password in plain, readable form.

Learning progress. To make your progress follow you between devices, we store the words you save, your reading position in each story, and your course and exam progress, tied to your account.

Payment information. Subscriptions are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card number — Stripe handles that directly and gives us only what we need to know your plan is active (such as your subscription status and renewal date).

Usage data. We use Google Analytics on the website to understand how the site is used — things like which pages are visited and how long people spend reading. This is aggregate usage data, not tied to your name or email.

What the mobile apps collect. The LearnChinesee mobile apps do not include any analytics software of their own. When you log in from the app, the app talks to the same account and progress described above; when you're logged out, the app only ever stores what's needed on your device to run the parts of it that work offline.

Ads (free tier only). The Android app shows ads served by Google AdMob between lessons for free-tier users only — if you have an active subscription, you never see an ad. To select, serve, and measure these ads, Google AdMob collects your device's advertising ID and similar device identifiers; we don't receive your reading, progress, or account data through this, and neither LearnChinesee nor AdMob ever sees your card details or precise location through it. Where required by law (for example, in the UK and EEA), the app asks for your consent before requesting any ad.

We use the information above to run your account, keep your reading and course progress in sync everywhere you use LearnChinesee, process your subscription, respond when you contact us, understand how people use the site so we can improve it, and — for free-tier mobile app users only — show ads through Google AdMob. We do not sell your personal information. Aside from the advertising identifier AdMob collects directly, as described above, we do not share your personal information with advertisers.

The website uses a single cookie to keep you signed in between visits. It doesn't track you across other sites. Google Analytics sets its own standard analytics cookies on the website, as described above.

Stripe (payments), Neon (our database provider, which stores the account and progress data described above), Amazon Web Services (storage for audio files used by the reader), Google Analytics (website usage statistics), and Google AdMob (mobile app ad serving, free-tier users only). Each of these processes data on our behalf, or in AdMob's case collects data directly on its own account, under their own privacy and security terms — we don't hand your data to anyone beyond what's needed to run the service.

We keep your account and progress data for as long as your account exists. If you'd like your account and the data associated with it deleted, email us at info@learnchinesee.com and we'll take care of it. If you're signed in through the LearnChinesee mobile app, you can also request deletion directly from Profile → Delete account — since the app shares the same account as the website, this submits the same request without needing to leave the app.

LearnChinesee is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under that age. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll remove it.

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and hashed password storage. No method of storing or transmitting data online is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information appropriately.

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use LearnChinesee after a change means you accept the updated policy.
